JR Art Lab

MON – JR Podcaster 10+ yrs (Spring 2024)

Theme of this term: Horror Genre.

As we enter a new term, our online JR Podcaster course delves into the spine-chilling world of horror storytelling, perfectly timed with the fast-approaching Halloween season. This Fall, as jack-o’-lanterns flicker and shadows lengthen, we’re focusing on creating terrifying antagonists and exploring the psychological depths of fear. We invite students to master the art of crafting suspenseful tales that send shivers down the spine, where bone-chilling monsters and the exploration of primal fears play a central role, bringing a touch of terror and suspense to the course.

Our aim is to guide students in constructing compelling narratives within the horror genre, infusing the storytelling craft with elements of dread and shock that resonate with the Halloween spirit. Whether it’s exploring the disturbing motivations of a supernatural entity, navigating the psychological torment of victims, or weaving through the dark corners of a haunted setting, this course opens the door to a world of nightmarish storytelling possibilities. Key topics covered include developing terrifying antagonists, building tension and suspense, and the art of seamlessly incorporating shocking twists and scares synonymous with horror. Additionally, students will explore pre-production aspects aligned with the genre, gaining insights into translating these bone-chilling narratives to the audio medium. Throughout the course, participants will actively engage in practical exercises, fostering experience in script creation, editing, and the collaborative dynamics of team-based horror writing.

In this online course, students will not only delve into the technical aspects of podcast creation, such as using audio recording software like Audacity (compatible with Windows, Mac OS X, and other operating systems), but also focus on nurturing their horror storytelling abilities. The curriculum encompasses horror scriptwriting, voice guidance for creating chilling atmospheres, audio recording and editing techniques to amplify scares, and the integration of eerie music and bone-chilling sound effects to enhance the Halloween-themed storytelling experience.

Teens, brimming with imaginative tales of terror, will find a platform to give voice to their spine-tingling narratives. Our mentors will curate selected works, showcasing them on JR Art Lab’s YouTube channel, allowing young storytellers to share their horror masterpieces with a broader audience, just in time for Halloween.

*For individual story creation, we’ll be using Google Docs and Audacity. Please visit https://www.audacityteam.org/ for more information about Audacity, the free and cross-platform audio software utilized in this course.
