JR Art Lab

MON – JR Designer 13 – 17 yrs (Fall 2021)

Photobashing is a technique where artists merge & blend photographs or 3D assets together while painting and compositing them into one finished piece. Using a photo editing software like AF Photo, digital artists start with a sketch/under painting, then take several images, cut, crop, and edit them together to create concept designs. What sets photo bashing apart from traditional collage, is the benefit of color correction, as well as perspective and lighting editing. This is used by concept artists to speed up their workflow and achieve a realistic style fast. . This greatly speeds up the process for making concept art or ideation.
Overlaying textures over other images/under paintings is also commonly practiced using layer blending modes and opacity adjustments/adjustment layers. Once a composite image is created, the digital artist often paints over it to increase visual cohesion and add a painterly effect often sought after in the industry.

In this series of workshops students will learn the necessary skills to execute such ideas working on mini briefs with their instructor. Some ideas will include book covers for a new novel being published or a concept piece for a new game release with characters. A useful real world skill for anyone these days. Students will use a combination of vector and pixel artworks and work with both photo and designer apps. Learning to work back and forth between the 2.
