This term is all about Art Toys. What are Art Toys?
Designer Toys, also called art toys, are toys and collectibles created by artists and designers that are either self-produced or made by small, independent toy companies, typically in very limited editions. Artists use a variety of materials, such as ABS plastic, vinyl, wood, metal, latex, plush, and resin. Creators often have backgrounds in graphic design, illustration, or fine art, but many accomplished toy artists are self-taught. The first Designer Toys appeared in the 1990s in Hong Kong and Japan. By the early 2000s, the majority of Designer Toys were based upon characters created by popular Lowbrow artists, forever linking the two movements.
So think a crossover between Mickey Mouse and Banksy.. Students will need to buy their own 3D printing filament and will have access to print from our studio printer all term.
To start with we will go through the process of developing and creating a product ( our designer toys). A valuable skill.. This will include researching the market of Designer toys. Developing concepts and workshopping the ideas with sketches and concept boards. After students are familiar with making designer toys they will begin to create and print their own designs. Students will also spend time hand painting their Designer toys with our studio acrylic paints.
