THU – JR Filmmaker 8 – 12 yrs (Fall 2020)
In this term students will learn the fundamental aspects of filmmaking, including script writing, basic camera angles and acting. We will also dive into GENRE studies. Student will work in a group setting and focus on one particular genre for their final script. For the first time ever in JR Art Lab film education history, our filmmakers will make their live action movies around an object – a toy. It can be a doll, a stuffed animal, an action figure or even a board game. Think about movies like Annabelle (but less scary), Jumanji (with less fantasy)…
Students will get plenty of hands-on experience and practical film knowledge, through working both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. Last but not least, students will learn how to work in a film crew.
All final productions will be uploaded to the student’s YouTube Channel as well as JR Art Lab YouTube channel.

LIVE Online Workshop ~ Type Design (June 15-19)
Want to acquire some skill that will help you weather the storm? Ever dreamt of a life that isn’t affected by COVID-19 Pandemic? This is the digital skill you need to get you through more unforeseeable events in the future – Type Design. Type design is the art and process of designing typefaces. It is often used synonymously with the term “font design”. In this workshop, we will learn some basic type design techniques. Students are expected to create a series of unique type designs using various graphic styles, including Dripping Text, Paper Cutout Text, Sliced Text and more.
We will use a Free and Open Source Image Editor – GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). It is a cross-platform image editor available for GNU/Linux, OS X, Windows and more operating systems. Check out https://www.gimp.org/ to learn more about the software.
LIVE Online Workshop ~ Poster Design (June 8-12)

In this course we will learn some basic visual effects in DaVinci Resolve 16. Visual Effects (abbreviated VFX) is the process by which digital imagery is created to manipulate or enhance real world footage that has been filmed with a video camera. We will create a series of weather effects including Fog, Lightning, Rain, Storm and Rainbow effects. Toronto weather is pretty unpredictable and it can change drastically in no time. Join us and learn to carry your own weather!
In this workshop, we will use the Hollywood-grade video editor – DaVinci Resolve 16. It’s also free to download and cross-platform. Students who enroll in this LIVE online workshop will be working on the Fusion feature to create their own visual effects. We will be using free stock images and video footage, so don’t worry if you don’t have a camera or video recording device.

Knowing how to shoot a video isn’t enough, You need to learn how to SELL it. In this workshop, students will learn some advanced editing techniques to make some stunning video commercials. Some basic Motion Graphics will also be covered in this course. Motion graphics are pieces of animation or digital footage which create the illusion of motion or rotation, and are usually combined with audio for use in multimedia projects.
In this workshop, we will use the Hollywood-grade video editor – DaVinci Resolve 16. It’s also free to download and cross-platform. Students who enroll in this LIVE online workshop will be working on the Fusion feature to create their own ads. We will be using free stock images and video footage, so don’t worry if you don’t have a camera or video recording device.
