Students will print and Laminate up to 3 finished artwork cards..

Aug 15 – 19 ~ Photo Painter

If you are looking for a creative way to enhance the quality of your photos, this camp is for you!

Photo Illustration is a general term which refers to the idea of taking a photograph and paint on it using digital art software. This art form is often used in advertising, marketing, book cover art, and even journalism. Campers will learn some basic photography techniques. Using the information that a photo provides, we can come up with a fun story that starts with what’s already in the picture. After visualizing and sketching those initial ideas, we will then move on to creating an illustration. Understanding the best way to add illustrations to your photographs will open up a world of possibilities for your artwork.

Campers are strongly recommended to bring an iPad or tablet with photo taking function. Please also make sure that the device is able to download apps for educational purpose. Wifi will be provided in the studio.

Art is a spiral shaped pathway. Returning students are welcomed back as the learning process requires every artist to visit creative fundamentals many times in order to grow their skills. Mastery is accomplished through repetition and discipline. At JR Art Lab we aim to create diversity of subject matter to make learning more exciting and engaging. Looking at the fundamentals from this new perspective may just do the trick.

Aug 8 – 12 ~ iPad Fairytale Animatic

You love animation right. Maybe when you grow up you want to work in Disney or Pixar. In this workshop you will learn one key step in making animations, the animatic. An animatic is made up of a sequence of still images timed to voice over and music (if you’re using them). Some animatics use rough sketches of the key frames of the sequence, scratch VO, and watermarked music. On the other end of the spectrum, some animatics use polished drawings, final VO, licensed music, and even a bit of basic movements like push-ins and wipes. In this workshop we will explore and produce our own animatics so you will have no problem showing someone that amazing idea you had for a movie.

Students must have their own iPad with Procreate in order to attend this workshop.

A video editing app is also recommended.. iMovie or similar..

Aug 8 – 12 ~ Smartphone Video

Recording video with your smartphone is more complicated than just avoiding Vertical Video Syndrome. In this camp we will start the course with basic, storytelling. Students will then work together to shoot, act and edit their own productions. Students will explore creative filming styles, including time-lapse, stop motion as well as green screen. Editing Apps will be introduced for editing and digital effects.

Students will get plenty of hands-on experience and practical film knowledge, through working both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. It’s also a great chance to improve teamwork and communication skills.

Week 8 ~ Anatomy of a Hero

Do you love Heroes & Heroines? Would you like to improve your figure drawing? In this summer camp we will do an intensive study of a Superhero’s and his/her poses. This camp will start off with an introduction to anatomy. We will learn some of the time tested proportions and tricks to remember the body shapes and structure. After this students will take turns pretending to be their favourite super hero in a pose while other students draw them. We will also learn to draw a short animation sequence and discuss the principles of animation.

Humans are key to drawing characters and designing costumes or fashion. Learning this skill is a vital part of many art carers including animation. This is also a great reason to spend a whole week drawing and mastering your favourite hero. Once you get one down it will be a hop and a skip to abstract those ideas onto other characters.. Working with superheroes is a great way to get the traditional figure drawing art skills across to kids using their favourite characters.
